Our Story

St Joseph Affordable Homes is a building and construction social enterprise, established in 2020 by the Archdiocese of Hobart.

Our organisation provides substantial and sustainable employment opportunities for young Tasmanians with barriers to employment and alleviates housing stress and homelessness.

We use extensive social and affordable housing construction programs to provide employment, in particular trade apprenticeships, for young Tasmanians.

In addition to employment, we offer a range of coaching, mentoring and wellbeing supports to our apprentices and qualified trades in partnership with Build Up Tassie to enable successful and fulfilling employment.

In our first three years of operations we built 269 homes and employed over 30 of apprentices and trainees across eight trades.

St Joseph Affordable Homes stands in the long tradition of Catholic service to people in need. Our patron saint is St Joseph the carpenter who apprenticed Jesus.

St Joseph is our patron saint. As well as being the foster father to Jesus he was a carpenter who apprenticed Jesus.

We have designed a unique double-sided St Joseph coin. Each coin is individually crafted locally and then blessed by Archbishop Julian Porteous.

Each of our homes has a St Joseph coin moulded into a brick and built into the front of the house. These coins are an everlasting reminder of the blessings that we give to the people and families who live in our homes. All of our apprentices and trainees are also given a coin when they commence. This is a symbol of the blessings from the Archbishop and the team. It is also reminds them that they will always be under the patronage of St Joseph.
